SoundCloud is testing a new feature that allows selected artists to sell music directly to their fans from their profiles.
The beta, currently available to a group of Artist Pro users, gives artists the option to sell downloads directly through SoundCloud, with the platform taking no commission from these sales.
The move introduces a different approach to music monetization, one that goes beyond the traditional streaming model.
For years, the main conversation around digital music has focused on streams, royalties, subscriptions, and audience growth.
But direct-to-fan models create another possibility: turning an existing relationship with an audience into a direct transaction.
For artists, this could mean more control over how they monetize their music and how they build relationships with their most engaged listeners.
It also reflects a broader shift in the digital music ecosystem.
Platforms are no longer competing only to be places where people listen to music. They are increasingly becoming spaces where artists can build communities, offer exclusive content, sell music, and create new revenue streams.
The feature is still in beta, so it remains to be seen how widely SoundCloud will roll it out.
But the direction is worth watching: the future of artist monetization may not depend on streaming alone.
