Spotify may be working on its own in-app song identification feature.
The update has not been officially confirmed by the platform yet, but Android Authority found references in the code of Spotify for Android that point to a possible music recognition tool.
Those references include text related to identifying a song, listening, analyzing audio, requesting microphone access, and showing messages when no match is found.
If this feature is eventually released, it could bring Spotify closer to an experience many users currently associate with Shazam: hearing a song somewhere, identifying it quickly, and then saving or playing it directly within the platform.
Not every discovery moment begins inside a playlist.
Sometimes it starts in a bar, on the radio, at an event, in a store, through an Instagram Story,
in a video, at a party, or in any other context where someone hears a song and wants to know what it is.
If Spotify integrates a song identification tool into its own app, that moment of curiosity could connect more directly to the artist profile, the song, the catalog, and the possibility of saving or continuing to listen.
That would turn discovery outside the platform into a possible entry point for consumption inside Spotify.
This also means that artist profiles need to be properly managed, metadata needs to be clear, catalogs need to be organized, credits need to be complete, and release strategies need to understand that discovery can come from many different places.
Someone can arrive at a song through an editorial playlist.
Through an algorithmic recommendation.
Through a search.
Through a video.
Through Shazam.
Through a possible song identification feature inside Spotify.
Or simply because they heard something in another context and wanted to know who was behind it.
We still do not know if this feature will be publicly released or when it could happen., but we can already see how platforms are constantly looking for new ways to connect listening moments with actions inside their own ecosystems.
