Spotify Lossless vs. YouTube Music: Can You Actually Hear the Difference?

For years, music streaming was built around a simple premise:
smaller files, less data, and quality that was good enough for most listeners.

But something is changing.

Spotify began offering Lossless audio to Premium users, with playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz in FLAC, while YouTube Music Premium offers streaming of up to 256 kbps in AAC and Opus.

Can you actually hear the difference between the two?

What does Lossless mean?

When we talk about Lossless audio, we mean compressed files without losing audio information.

Spotify currently offers Lossless playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz in FLAC. FLAC reduces the size of the file without discarding information from the original audio.

Formats like AAC and Opus, on the other hand, use lossy compression. This means they remove certain audio information to create much smaller files that are more efficient for streaming.

And that doesn’t automatically mean they sound “bad.”

In fact, that efficiency is precisely one of the reasons these formats have been so important to the growth of streaming.

What about YouTube Music?

YouTube Music Premium offers different quality levels, reaching up to 256 kbps in AAC and Opus.

On certain devices and under specific conditions, you may also come across a format identified as Opus 774, a high-quality Opus stream that runs at around 256 kbps. The “774” is a technical format identifier, not a bitrate of 774 kbps.

And this is where things get interesting.

Opus is an extremely efficient codec.

That’s why simply comparing “256 kbps vs. 24-bit/44.1 kHz” can be misleading. They are different encoding systems, and bitrate alone doesn’t determine how much “better” a song will sound.

So, does Spotify Lossless sound better?

Technically, yes: it offers Lossless playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.

But that doesn’t mean everyone will hear an obvious difference.

Spotify itself notes that many factors affect the listening experience, including the device, connection, playback system, and the conditions in which you’re listening.

With good headphones or studio monitors, a suitable DAC, and a relatively controlled environment, the difference may be easier to notice.

But if you’re listening from your phone, in the car, or through standard Bluetooth headphones, the experience may be very different.

And that’s where the real debate begins.

The streaming battle is changing

For a long time, platforms competed mainly on having more music.

Then came better recommendation algorithms, playlists, artist tools, and increasingly personalized experiences.

Now there’s another variable: playback quality.

Spotify isn’t just offering Lossless. It’s also building an increasingly sophisticated audio experience, while YouTube Music continues to develop its own quality and playback options.

When the way people consume music changes, so does what we need to understand about how that music is delivered, stored, and played back.

There’s one final question that may be the most interesting of all:

Does better technical quality necessarily mean a better listening experience?

Not always. Because in music, as in so many other things,
more information doesn’t always mean we perceive it better.
